The Volkswagen Transporter T4 (Typ 70/7D) launched in January 1990, initiating a engineering revolution for VW commercial vans. It abandoned the rear-engine layout in favor of a front transverse engine driving the front wheels. Built in short and long wheelbase options with multiple roof heights, it offered Kasten panel vans, Caravelle shuttle buses, Multivan executive transport, and California campers.

Engine offerings contained four- and five-cylinder petrol engines (1.8 to 2.5L), a VR6 2.8-liter (up to 204 hp), and famous 1.9 D/TD, 2.4 D, and 2.5 TDI turbodiesels. The Syncro AWD system remained an option until production transitioned in 2003.
