About this generation
The second generation of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric minivan built on the new SSP modular platform with LFP batteries and zonal electronics co-developed with Rivian.
The second-generation Volkswagen ID.Buzz transitions from the earlier MEB architecture to the Volkswagen Group's new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), a modular architecture replacing both MEB and PPE across the group's brands. This shift is designed to significantly lower production costs and bring pricing closer to internal-combustion rivals while continuing to support passenger minivans and commercial van configurations.
To further reduce costs and improve charging performance over the outgoing model's 200 kW limit, the second generation replaces nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) lithium-ion batteries with lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) packs. The new battery system incorporates onboard heating to mitigate cold-weather range and charging losses, paired with a higher-voltage charging system.
Inside, the cabin replaces touch-capacitive controls with physical buttons and adopts a zonal software architecture developed by RV Tech, the joint venture between Rivian and Volkswagen. This setup reduces the number of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and wiring harnesses while improving system responsiveness. On the outside, the styling evolves beyond the direct retro design of the first generation while retaining signature heritage cues such as the oversized front logo and two-tone paint schemes.
