The first generation Toyota Harrier mid-size crossover (XU10 series) launched in Japan in December 1997. Developed under chief engineer Makoto Oshima on the Camry MCV20 chassis, the Harrier effectively pioneered the modern luxury crossover segment by combining the smooth ride comfort and acoustic isolation of an executive sedan with elevated ground clearance (185 mm) and all-weather capability. The sleek, aerodynamic body showcased a distinctive front apron, quad headlamp clusters, and optional two-tone exterior paint finishes. The upscale interior was appointed with suede or leather upholstery, an Electro Multivision touch interface, and a JBL premium sound system.
Engine selections comprised two gasoline units: a 2.2-liter 5S-FE four-cylinder (140 hp, replaced in 2000 by a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE producing 160 hp) and a smooth 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 generating 220 horsepower. Both powertrains paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The Harrier was offered in front-wheel drive and Full-Time 4WD configurations with a viscous-coupling central differential lock. The model was rebadged for export as the Lexus RX 300. A 2000 facelift updated the front grille inserts, clear headlight lenses, and rear lighting trim.
