Suzuki Escudo I (ET/TA) gallery (1988–1997)

The first-generation Japanese Suzuki Escudo body-on-frame SUV (ET/TA) was produced from 1988 to 1997.

Launching for the Japanese domestic market in May 1988, the first-generation Suzuki Escudo (ET/TA series) established the modern compact leisure SUV category. Built around a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis with MacPherson front struts, a rear live axle, and part-time 4WD, it offered 3-door hardtops, soft-top convertibles, extended 5-door 'Nomadic' wagons, and commercial van trims.

Engine offerings included 1.6-liter four-cylinders (82 to 100 hp), expanding in 1994 to a 2.0-liter DOHC V6 (140 hp) and a Mazda-sourced 2.0-liter turbodiesel. The lineup topped out with a 2.5-liter V6 (160 hp) in late 1996 alongside minor cabin updates.
