The fifth generation Sambar was the final in-house developed Subaru commercial vehicle line featuring rear-engine RR construction.
Produced from 1999 to 2012, the fifth-generation Subaru Sambar (TT truck, TV van, TW Dias Wagon) represented the pinnacle of Subaru's in-house mini-truck engineering. Retaining rear-engine rear-wheel-drive (RR) architecture and 4-wheel independent suspension, it was powered by the 658 cc 4-cylinder EN07 engine (naturally aspirated 48 hp or supercharged 58 hp). The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
Facelifts in 2002 and 2007 modernized front fascia styling and cabin infotainment. In February 2012, Subaru officially ended in-house kei car manufacturing at its Gunma assembly facility. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
