The sixth generation Sambar was an OEM rebadge of the Daihatsu Hijet featuring front-engine architecture.
Produced from 2012 to 2022, the sixth-generation Subaru Sambar (S321/S331 van, S201/S211 truck) was an OEM supply version of the Daihatsu Hijet Cargo/Truck under the Toyota group partnership. The generation shifted to front-engine RWD/4WD architecture powered by 660 cc 3-cylinder KF engines (46–53 hp naturally aspirated or 64 hp turbo). The MacPherson strut front suspension setup paired with the refined rear suspension layout struck an optimal balance between highway composure and smooth absorption of road surface imperfections. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
A 2017 facelift restyled the front grille, LED headlights, and added Smart Assist III t active safety technology. Production ended in early 2022. Inside, the cabin showcased durable trim materials, clear instrument cluster graphics, and intuitive control ergonomics that earned praise from automotive reviewers globally. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
