The third generation Sambar introduced the comfortable Sambar Try passenger microvan and an available supercharged engine.
Produced from 1982 to 1990, the third-generation Subaru Sambar (KR/KT platform) debuted a boxy exterior layout with maximized interior volume. The generation featured the premier of the passenger-oriented Sambar Try microvan. Propulsion relied on the 544 cc EK23 engine, joined in 1987 by a supercharged variant producing 46 hp. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
Drivetrain choices expanded to 4/5-speed manuals and automatic gearboxes paired with part-time 4WD. A 1987 facelift restyled the front grille and headlight enclosures prior to production ending in 1990. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
