The first-generation Kia Sportage (factory codes JA and NB-7) entered production in 1993, utilizing a Mazda Bongo platform platform. It featured a traditional body-on-frame construction, a part-time four-wheel drive system with a low-range transfer case, and an independent front suspension. Primarily produced as a 5-door SUV, it was also available in select markets as a 3-door soft-top or hard-top convertible SUV. Its robust chassis provided genuine off-road capability. This generation of the Sportage (JA) was produced from 1993 to 2004 and offered in внедорожник body styles. Built on an engineered platform, it features strong structural rigidity, refined aerodynamics, and advanced occupant safety engineering.

Powerplants were sourced from Mazda, including 2.0-liter inline-four petrol engines developing 95 to 130 hp (in 8-valve and 16-valve configurations) alongside a 2.0-liter RF turbo-diesel engine producing 83 hp. A 1998 update refreshed the front grille, introduced a refined cabin, and added an extended Grand Sportage variant. Production of the first generation continued through 2004, establishing Kia's presence in the global SUV segment.
