The first-generation Kia Sportage (factory codes JA and NB-7) entered production in 1993, utilizing a Mazda Bongo platform platform. It featured a traditional body-on-frame construction, a part-time four-wheel drive system with a low-range transfer case, and an independent front suspension. Primarily produced as a 5-door SUV, it was also available in select markets as a 3-door soft-top or hard-top convertible SUV. Its robust chassis provided genuine off-road capability.
