Kia Chooses Mexico as the EV3’s New Manufacturing Base
Kia is preparing to launch EV3 production in Mexico, with officials confirming a $649 million plan centered on the company’s Pesquería plant in Nuevo León. The compact electric SUV is slated to begin assembly on August 4, 2026, marking the EV3 as Kia’s first battery-powered model produced in the country.
The program stretches through 2028 and covers more than just manufacturing equipment. It also includes plant improvements, supplier development, and spending tied to charging networks, renewable energy, and water-reuse initiatives associated with the site. For buyers and fleet customers in North America, the main issues are where these vehicles will be sold and how rising local sourcing could affect cost and supply.
What Kia Is Investing In
The $649 million package is aimed at expanding and updating the Pesquería complex so it can support dedicated EV3 assembly alongside Kia’s current lineup. According to company and local government statements, a significant portion of the budget will go toward the production line and the tooling needed for the electric SUV.
Once the line goes live on August 4, 2026, output is expected to increase gradually during the rest of the year for both Mexican customers and export destinations. Kia has already opened preorders for the EV3 in Mexico, making it the brand’s first fully electric model to be both manufactured and sold locally.
Local Sourcing, Infrastructure, and Export Strategy
Officials in Mexico say the EV3 will begin with roughly 27 percent local content, with that figure expected to climb as more suppliers are added in the region. Key components, including battery packs, will initially be sourced from Asia before more parts shift closer to Pesquería over time. That sourcing mix could play an important role in trade compliance and pricing.
The investment also supports charging stations along important Mexican routes connected to Kia’s dealer network, along with renewable energy and water recycling projects at the plant. Those efforts are meant to reduce the vehicle’s production footprint while supporting early EV adoption locally. For the United States, the standout point is that Mexican-built EV3 units are expected to be exported north later in 2026.
Kia’s decision turns Pesquería into a much more serious EV manufacturing center, not just a trial site. If supplier localization and infrastructure growth keep moving forward, the plant could help improve availability and potentially lower costs for North American customers.
The biggest question now is how Kia prices the EV3 against its other small electric models and whether Pesquería becomes a larger source of volume in the years ahead. Key signals to watch include dealer stock, supplier announcements, and the pace of charging and sustainability projects around the plant.
