The first-generation Hyundai Santa Fe (SM) mid-size crossover was manufactured from 2000 to 2006 as Hyundai's founding SUV model.

The first-generation Hyundai Santa Fe (SM chassis) debuted in 2000 as Hyundai's first entry into the SUV market. Engineered on a modified Sonata EF platform, the Santa Fe featured muscular exterior styling with pronounced fender contours and a rugged stance. Full-time all-wheel drive models utilized a viscous coupling or available limited-slip rear differential.

Engine offerings included 2.0-liter, 2.4-liter four-cylinders, 2.7-liter Delta V6 (173 hp), and 3.5-liter Sigma V6 (200 hp) petrol engines, alongside a 2.0-liter CRDi turbodiesel. Transmissions comprised five-speed manual and four/five-speed automatic gearboxes. A 2004 mid-cycle refresh updated front grille inserts, tail lamps, and instrument cluster graphics.
