The third-generation Hyundai Elantra (XD platform) debuted in 2000. Featuring sharp geometric body character lines and increased interior passenger room, the XD was available as a traditional four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback (marketed as the Elantra GT in North America).

Engine offerings comprised 1.6-liter Alpha/Beta, 1.8-liter Beta, and 2.0-liter Beta II engines equipped with CVVT variable valve timing producing up to 143 hp, alongside a 2.0-liter turbodiesel CRDi for European customers. A 2003 facelift (XD2) refreshed the front grille, vertical taillights, and instrument cluster layout.
