The second-generation Hyundai Elantra (J2/RD) produced from 1995 to 2000 added a station wagon body and home-grown Beta engines.

The second-generation Hyundai Elantra (chassis codes J2 for sedan and RD for estate) debuted in 1995 featuring sleek, rounded bio-design contours. For the first time, the line expanded beyond a notchback sedan to include a practical five-door station wagon model.

Significantly, the J2 generation introduced Hyundai's proprietary Beta engine series, featuring 1.6-liter, 1.8-liter (128 hp), and 2.0-liter (140 hp) 16-valve DOHC petrol units. A 1998 mid-life facelift (often referred to as RD2) updated front bumper covers, dual headlamp lenses, and interior center console switchgear.
