The first-generation Hyundai Elantra (J1) compact sedan was produced from 1990 to 1995, establishing Hyundai's key global passenger car line.

The first-generation Hyundai Elantra (J1 chassis) debuted in October 1990 to replace the aging Stellar. Designed as a modern compact sedan, it targeted competitive international markets. In European territories, the model was badged as the Lantra due to trademark conflicts with Lotus Elan and Mitsubishi Elante.

Under the hood, the J1 utilized Mitsubishi-licensed 1.6-liter (113 hp) and 1.8-liter (124 hp) DOHC 16-valve Sirius four-cylinder engines. Transmission options included a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. A mid-cycle facelift in 1993 brought rounded headlamps, updated grille slots, and subtle rear lamp refinements.
