The fifth-generation Hyundai Elantra (MD platform) premiered at the Busan International Motor Show in April 2010. Embracing Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy, the MD featured sweeping light clusters, aggressive body character lines, and a low drag coefficient of 0.28. A two-door Elantra Coupe (JK chassis) joined the sedan lineup for 2013.

Engine technology featured 1.6-liter Gamma MPI/GDI (130-140 hp), 1.8-liter Nu MPI (150 hp), and 2.0-liter Nu GDI (173 hp) petrol units. Gearbox options transitioned entirely to six-speed manuals and six-speed automatics. A 2013 facelift added projector headlights with LED light guides and refined interior HVAC controls.
