The fifth-generation Honda Accord (CD/CE) debuted in 1993, dividing into regional platforms for North America/Japan and Europe to match local market preferences. Offered as a sedan, coupe, and wagon, the CD chassis featured wider dimensions, improved crash safety structures, and an aerodynamic profile with smooth bodysides.

Powertrain choices were highlighted by 2.0-liter F20B and 2.2-liter F22B four-cylinder engines with VTEC variable valve timing, producing 135 to 190 horsepower in the high-performance SiR trim. In 1995, a 2.7-liter C27A V6 engine producing 172 horsepower was introduced for North America. A mid-lifecycle update in 1995 revised the grille, lighting elements, and dashboard ergonomics.
