The fourth-generation Falcon range (XD, XE, XF series) abandoned 1970s curves in favor of crisp European square-edged design influenced by the Ford Granada Mk II. The chassis was lighter yet retained full-size family interior space. Configurations included sedan, wagon, and utility pickup models.
The 1982 XE series upgraded the rear suspension to a coil-sprung Watt's linkage system. Amid fuel economy pressures, Ford phased out the V8 engine, focusing on fuel-injected 4.1-liter inline-sixes with EEC-IV electronic engine controls. The XF series became the highest-selling Falcon series in Australia's automotive history.
