The fifth generation Buick Skylark was introduced midway through the 1975 model year, initially replacing the Apollo coupe and hatchback before taking over the entire GM rear-wheel-drive X-body lineup for Buick in 1976. Available body configurations included a two-door coupe, three-door hatchback, and four-door notchback sedan. The powertrain roster featured Buick's renowned 231 cubic inch (3.8L) V6 alongside an inline-six and several V8 options ranging from 260 to 350 cubic inches (4.3L to 5.7L). Gearboxes included 3-speed or 4-speed manual transmissions and the widely used 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic. Notable trim packages included the luxury-oriented Custom and the sporty S/R package. Styling updates in 1978 brought refined front-end treatments with square headlights. It was sold in North America as an efficient yet upscale compact commuter.
