The seventh generation Buick Skylark arrived for 1986 on General Motors' front-wheel-drive N-body compact platform, initially as a four-door sedan alongside the Somerset coupe before consolidating the nameplate in 1988. It offered two-door coupe and four-door sedan body configurations. The engine range featured the 2.5-liter Tech IV inline-four, an optional 3.0-liter Buick V6, and later the high-output 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve Quad 4 engine, along with a smooth 3.3-liter 3300 V6. Power was directed to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual or a 3-speed 3T40 automatic transmission. In 1989, the Skylark underwent a major mid-cycle refresh with revised exterior sheet metal, wraparound lights, and a modernized instrument panel. Available in Custom, Luxury Edition, and Gran Sport trims, it was sold across North American dealerships.
