The first generation Buick Skylark was introduced in 1953 as a limited-production luxury model celebrating the 50th anniversary of Buick. Built initially on the full-size Roadmaster chassis, it featured bespoke hand-finished styling with cut-down doors, radiused wheel openings, and full-flowing Sweepspear body moldings. Power came from Buick's innovative 322 cubic inch (5.3L) Nailhead V8 engine producing 188 horsepower in 1953 and updated to 200 horsepower for the 1954 model year. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a smooth Twin Turbine Dynaflow automatic transmission. For 1954, Skylark migrated to the shorter Century body shell with unique tail fins and distinct rear quarter styling. The model offered lavish equipment including power steering, power brakes, power windows, and a foot-controlled Selectronic signal-seeking radio. Sold primarily in the North American market, it remains an iconic collector classic.
