About the model
The first-generation BMW M3 in the E30 chassis was developed as a homologation special for touring car racing, produced as a coupe and convertible with a high-revving four-cylinder engine and a manual gearbox. It featured boxed fender flares, bespoke aerodynamic components, and a track-tuned chassis.
With the E36 and E46 iterations, the model switched to naturally aspirated inline-six engines. The E36 briefly introduced a four-door sedan body style alongside the coupe and convertible, while the E46 focused on coupe and cabriolet configurations equipped with manual and SMG automated transmissions.
The fourth generation (E90/E92/E93) was the only M3 equipped with a naturally aspirated V8 engine, offered across sedan, coupe, and convertible bodies. The F80 generation consolidated the nameplate into a dedicated four-door performance sedan with twin-turbocharging, leading into the current G80 generation, which features all-wheel drive and the first production M3 Touring wagon.

BMW has revealed the upcoming next-generation 3 Series sports sedan, headlined by the new M350 xDrive that replaces the previous M340i. Powered by a mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six delivering 443 hp, it hits 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and introduces a rear-wheel-drive 'Drift Moment' mode.
