Launched in late 1994, the first-generation Audi A4 (chassis code B5) marked a pivotal milestone for Audi by replacing the long-running Audi 80 series. Built upon the PL45 platform featuring a longitudinally mounted engine layout, the B5 introduced smooth, aerodynamic exterior contours that defined mid-nineties automotive design. The model was offered as a sleek four-door sedan and, starting in 1995, as the highly popular Avant estate.
Key technical innovations included an advanced aluminum multi-link front suspension and innovative five-valve-per-cylinder gasoline engines (1.8 and 1.8T), alongside a refined 2.8-liter V6. Frugal 1.9-liter TDI diesel engines achieved remarkable efficiency ratings. Equipped with Torsen-based quattro permanent all-wheel drive, the A4 B5 earned high acclaim, establishing Audi as a core competitor in the executive compact sector.
