Volkswagen Karmann Ghia I (Typ 14) gallery (1955–1974)

The first-generation Volkswagen Karmann Ghia (internal designation Typ 14) was manufactured between 1955 and 1974. The vehicle combined mechanical components from the Beetle (Type 1) with styling designed by Italy's Carrozzeria Ghia and hand-crafted body assembly by Wilhelm Karmann in Osnabrück. A convertible model joined the initial 2+2 coupe in 1957.

Powertrains consisted of air-cooled flat-four engines displacing 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, and 1.6 liters, yielding outputs from 30 hp to 60 hp. The rear-mounted engine drove the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox or an optional semi-automatic transmission. Total production reached over 440,000 units during its 19-year manufacturing cycle.
