The first-generation Volkswagen Derby two-door sedan with internal code Typ 86 was launched in 1977. Created by extending the rear notchback structure of the Polo Mk1 (itself derived from the Audi 50), the Derby provided an impressive 300-liter boot capacity. Its lightweight front-wheel-drive platform delivered agile urban handling and strong fuel efficiency.

Powertrain choices for the Typ 86 were four-cylinder gasoline engines displacing 0.9 liters (40 hp), 1.1 liters (50 hp), and 1.3 liters (60 hp). All engines were paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The suspension featured front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion-beam setup.
