The Volkswagen Caddy I (Typ 14) was introduced in 1979 at VW's Westmoreland plant in the US as the Rabbit Pickup, arriving in Europe in 1982 under the Caddy name. Utilizing Golf I front structural components and cabin layout, it added a leaf-sprung rear axle and an open cargo bed rated for up to 625 kg payloads.
Engine selections included 1.5, 1.6, and 1.8-liter petrol engines alongside a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated diesel producing 54 hp. European production ran in Sarajevo until 1992, while South African assembly continued until 2007.
