About this generation

The Volkswagen New Beetle revived the legendary Beetle style on a modern front-wheel-drive Golf IV platform.

The Volkswagen New Beetle (Typ 9C) made its debut at the 1997 Detroit Auto Show. Evolving from the Concept One design study, it pioneered modern automotive retro-futurism. Departing completely from its rear-engine predecessor, the New Beetle was built on the front-wheel-drive PQ34 platform shared with the Golf IV. Body options included a three-door hatchback and a soft-top convertible.

The interior featured retro cues including a dashboard flower vase. Powertrain offerings ranged from 1.4 to 2.5-liter gasoline engines (including a 1.8 Turbo and a limited-edition 3.2 VR6 RSI model) alongside 1.9 TDI turbodiesels. A minor facelift in 2005 refreshed headlamps and bumper trim.
