About this generation

The third-generation Supra (A70) finally separated from the Celica, becoming an independent model featuring powerful turbo engines and rear-wheel drive.

The third generation (A70), debuting in 1986, marked a significant milestone: the Supra became a completely independent model line. While the Celica shifted to a front-wheel-drive platform, the Supra retained its classic rear-wheel-drive GT layout. The car featured a sleek, aerodynamic body with pop-up headlights and introduced Toyota's innovative TEMS (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension) system. The base engine was the 3.0-liter 7M-GE (200 hp), but in 1987, a turbocharged version (7M-GTE) was introduced, producing 230 hp (later upgraded to 232 hp).

In the Japanese domestic market, 2.0-liter engines were also offered, including the twin-turbo 1G-GTE. In 1990, the model received a major facelift, bringing revised lighting, bumpers, and the new corporate Toyota logo. Concurrently, Japan received a flagship version powered by the all-new 2.5-liter twin-turbo 1JZ-GTE engine, producing 280 hp, an engine renowned for its remarkable durability. The A70 Supra was available as a standard hardtop coupe or with a removable roof panel (Sport Roof/Targa). Production continued until 1993.
