About this generation

First generation of the Toyota Sienna full-size minivan built on the Camry platform, engineered specifically for the North American market to succeed the Previa.

The first generation Toyota Sienna made its market debut in late 1997 as a direct strategic response to the expanding North American minivan segment. Transitioning away from the rear-wheel-drive mid-engine architecture of the outgoing Previa, the Sienna adopted a conventional front-wheel-drive platform derived from the Toyota Camry (MCV20 chassis). Built on a 2,900 mm wheelbase, the five-door body housed a versatile three-row seating cabin designed for maximum passenger utility. Exterior styling was clean and understated, featuring dual sliding rear doors and a smooth front fascia. Interior accommodations prioritized practicality, featuring removable middle seats and an efficient rear climate system.

Powertrain duties were fulfilled by a 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 gasoline engine delivering 194 horsepower through a four-speed automatic transmission. A mid-cycle update for the 2001 model year introduced subtle cosmetic updates to the grille and headlights alongside technical enhancements, adding VVT-i variable valve timing that raised engine output to 210 horsepower. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS) and dual front airbags, with top-tier XLE trims offering plush leather upholstery and second-row captain's chairs.
