Launched in November 1984 to succeed the iconic J40 in the heavy-duty utility tier, the 70 Series (J70) is engineered for extreme environment operations. Built around a thick ladder frame and solid beam axles, it comes in short-wheelbase 3-door, long-wheelbase 5-door wagon, Troop Carrier, and pickup configurations. Front leaf springs were upgraded to coil springs in 1999. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine offerings include 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 petrol engines and robust diesels such as the 4.2L 1HZ, 4.5L 1VD-FTV V8 turbodiesel, and 2.8L 1GD-FTV four-cylinder. Equipped with heavy-duty manual or automatic gearboxes and part-time 4WD with locking differentials, major updates were applied in 2007 and 2023. The J70 series remains in active production. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
