Unveiled at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show, the third-generation Avalon (XX30) was a revolutionary step for the model. The design took on sleeker, more aerodynamic, and modern lines. The car grew in size once again, and thanks to a flat underbody design, rear passengers benefited from a completely flat floor with no transmission tunnel, offering unmatched comfort in its class. The major mechanical highlight was the introduction of the all-new 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6 engine producing 268 hp. Paired with a new 5-speed (and later 6-speed) automatic transmission, it propelled the large sedan from 0 to 60 mph in under 7 seconds.

The model was offered in four trims: the base XL, the sportier Touring, the upscale XLS, and the flagship Limited. The Limited trim featured ventilated seats, push-button start, and radar cruise control. The sedan received facelifts in 2008 and 2011. The 2011 update was particularly extensive, giving the Avalon a completely new front fascia, revised taillights, and a newly designed dashboard. The third generation solidified its reputation as an exceptionally reliable and comfortable vehicle.
