The second-generation Avalon (XX20) arrived in late 1999 for the 2000 model year. The sedan retained the architecture of its predecessor but featured a more modern and substantial design, while also growing in size. The cabin became even more spacious, and the equipment level approached that of Toyota's luxury brand, Lexus. For the first time on a US Toyota, an optional 115-volt AC power inverter was offered. Other available features included a navigation system, dual-zone climate control, and front-seat-mounted side airbags. The powertrain remained the 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6, but it now featured VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence), boosting output to 210 hp.

For the 2003 model year, the Avalon received a minor facelift, featuring a wider grille, new taillights, and additional wood-grain trim in the interior. Mechanically, the car remained conservative, offering a softly tuned suspension and exceptional ride quality, which made it highly popular among older drivers. The XX20 Avalon solidified Toyota's standing in the full-size sedan segment, successfully competing with domestic rivals from Buick and Ford.
