Toyota Avalon I (XX10) photos

The first-generation Toyota Avalon (XX10) debuted in 1994 for the 1995 model year, replacing the discontinued Cressida in the US market. The car was designed in the United States and built at the Georgetown, Kentucky plant. The Avalon was based on an extended version of the popular Camry platform, providing impressive interior space comparable to large American domestic sedans. A unique feature for a Japanese brand was the availability of a front bench seat, allowing the car to accommodate six passengers. The sole powertrain offering was a 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 engine producing 192 hp, mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The model was positioned as a comfortable and quiet highway cruiser. In 1997, the Avalon received a mid-cycle refresh that included updated headlights, a revised front bumper, and a new grille. Sound insulation was improved, and new comfort features were added. Engine output saw a slight bump to 200 hp. The vehicle was also exported to several Asian countries and manufactured in Australia (with minor modifications), proving to be a successful venture for Toyota across multiple markets.
