Debuting in late 2016 for the Japanese market and globally in early 2017, the fifth-generation Suzuki Swift (A2L series) was constructed on Suzuki's lightweight HEARTECT platform. The new architecture dropped curb weight by up to 120 kg (starting at just 840 kg) while significantly bolstering body rigidity and collision protection. Design features included concealed rear door handles integrated into the C-pillars, a prominent hexagonal front grille, and available full-LED headlights. Advanced safety technology introduced the Dual Sensor Brake Support system incorporating a monocular camera and laser sensor.

Engine offerings encompassed a 1.2-liter Dualjet four-cylinder (90 hp) and a 1.0-liter three-cylinder Boosterjet turbocharged engine (111 hp), both available with SHVS mild-hybrid technology. The hot-hatch Swift Sport (ZC33S) transitioned to a 1.4-liter K14C Boosterjet turbocharged engine producing 140 hp and 230 Nm of torque. A 2020 mid-cycle revision brought subtle aesthetic updates, improved fuel economy ratings, and standard 12V mild-hybrid integration for European markets.
