Unveiled in July 1984, the third-generation Subaru Leone (AA sedan, AG coupe, AL wagon) featured angular wedge-shaped aerodynamics with a low drag coefficient (Cd 0.35). Power came from the 1.8-liter OHC EA82 flat-four in naturally aspirated (84–97 hp) and turbocharged EA82T (115–136 hp) forms. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

Technological additions included Full-Time 4WD with center differential locks and Electro-Pneumatic height-adjustable air suspension. A 1988 facelift refreshed front lighting. Passenger models were succeeded by the Legacy in 1989, while commercial wagon production ran through 1994. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
