The fourth generation Legacy gained acclaim for its sophisticated styling, refined chassis dynamics, and the inclusion of the EE20 boxer diesel engine.
Launched in May 2003, the fourth-generation Legacy (BL sedan, BP wagon) achieved the Japan Car of the Year title. Built on a lighter, stiffer chassis featuring aluminum body panels, it offered enhanced dynamics and safety credentials. Engine options encompassed 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter flat-fours (naturally aspirated and single-turbocharged), the 3.0-liter EZ30 flat-six (245 hp), and, starting in 2008, the world's first horizontally opposed 2.0-liter EE20 turbo-diesel engine. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
A 2006 facelift updated exterior lighting and introduced the SI-Drive powertrain control system permitting variable throttle and shift mapping. Performance Spec.B models received 6-speed manual gearboxes derived from the Impreza WRX STI. Fourth-generation Legacy production ran globally through 2009. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
