Subaru Legacy II (BD/BG/BK) gallery (1993–1999)

Introduced in October 1993, the second-generation Subaru Legacy (BD sedan, BG/BK wagon) featured an elongated wheelbase and streamlined bodywork crafted under the design direction of Olivier Boulay. Underneath, it retained the flat-four engine architecture with 2.0-liter, 2.2-liter, and 2.5-liter EJ petrol units. In the domestic Japanese market, the iconic GT trim introduced a sequential twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter EJ20 engine outputting 280 hp paired with manual or automatic transmissions and AWD. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

A mid-cycle facelift in 1996 updated the front and rear styling along with dashboard ergonomic layout. Significantly, the raised-suspension crossover wagon, initially marketed as the Legacy Outback, originated from this generation's wagon body in 1994. Production of the second-generation Legacy ended in 1999 as the third generation succeeded it. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort.
