The first generation Subaru Justy supermini was produced from 1984 to 1994 and introduced the pioneered ECVT transmission.
Debuting in 1984, the first-generation Subaru Justy (KAD platform) was a subcompact hatchback offered in 3-door and 5-door body styles. Developed as an enlarged version of the Rex kei car, it was powered by 3-cylinder EF petrol engines: the 1.0-liter EF10 and the 1.2-liter EF12. Drive options included front-wheel drive and push-button selectable part-time 4WD. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
In 1987, the Justy made automotive history by becoming the first mass-production vehicle fitted with an electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). A 1989 facelift updated the front grille, headlights, and interior layout. Production ran in Japan through 1994. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
