Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit I (SZ) gallery (1980–1989)

The first-generation Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit was introduced in 1980 as the direct successor to the long-running Silver Shadow series. Built on the newly designed SZ platform, the vehicle showcased modern, squared-off exterior styling with substantially larger glass areas, penned by designer Fritz Feller. It was powered by the traditional 6.75-litre aluminium V8 engine originally equipped with twin Solex carburettors, mated to a smooth General Motors Turbo-Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission. In 1986, the powertrain received a major update with the introduction of Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection to meet strict international emissions regulations. The chassis featured an advanced self-levelling hydropneumatic rear suspension supplied under licence from Citroen, ensuring superior ride comfort, paired with an upgraded mineral oil hydraulic braking system. The bespoke cabin was trimmed with hand-selected Connolly leather, polished walnut veneers, and Wilton wool carpeting. The Silver Spirit Mark I was exported globally, achieving strong sales across the United Kingdom, continental Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
