About this generation

The third-generation Nissan Qashqai (J12) introduced the updated CMF-C platform, an entirely electrified powertrain lineup free of diesel engines, and Nissan's innovative e-Power series-hybrid system.

Revealed in early 2021, the third-generation Nissan Qashqai (codenamed J12) became the first European model to utilize the Alliance's upgraded CMF-C platform while retaining its classic five-door, five-seat crossover body style. Compared to the preceding J11, the J12 grew slightly in length, width, and wheelbase, yielding greater rear knee room and increased cargo capacity, while extensive use of lightweight materials—including aluminum doors, front fenders, and hood alongside a composite tailgate—substantially boosted torsional stiffness without adding excess weight. The most dramatic mechanical departure from the second generation was the complete elimination of diesel engines in favor of full electrification. Entry-level variants feature an updated 1.3-liter DiG-T turbocharged petrol engine integrated with a 12-volt mild-hybrid system, paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a reworked Xtronic CVT, with all-wheel drive available on higher-output CVT models. The technical highlight of the J12 range is the e-Power powertrain, a series-hybrid configuration in which a 1.5-liter variable-compression turbocharged petrol engine acts solely as a generator to charge the battery, while an electric motor exclusively drives the front wheels for an EV-like driving experience. Inside, the cabin gained a fully digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and upgraded infotainment. In 2024, the J12 received a comprehensive facelift featuring a bold frameless front grille inspired by traditional Japanese armor scales, split LED headlights, upgraded interior trim with Alcantara accents, built-in Google infotainment services, and enhanced driver-assistance systems, continuing its strong presence across European, UK, and Australian markets.
