The first-generation Nissan Qashqai (J10) pioneered the compact urban crossover segment by blending the agility of a five-door hatchback with the practicality of a traditional SUV.
Unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show, the first-generation Nissan Qashqai (codenamed J10) was engineered on the Renault-Nissan Alliance C platform, sharing its foundational architecture with models like the X-Trail and Renault Megane. Developed primarily by Nissan's European design and engineering teams as an innovative alternative to traditional C-segment hatchbacks and estates, it effectively replaced both the Almera and the larger Primera in the European lineup. Initially launched exclusively as a five-door, five-seat crossover, the range was expanded in 2008 with the introduction of the Qashqai+2 (JJ10), which featured a stretched wheelbase, revised rear roofline, and a foldable third row of seats for seven-passenger capability. The powertrain lineup consisted of naturally aspirated 1.6-liter (HR16DE) and 2.0-liter (MR20DE) petrol engines alongside 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter dCi turbodiesel units sourced from Renault. Transmission options included 5-speed and 6-speed manual gearboxes, a 6-speed torque-converter automatic paired with the larger diesel, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), with customers able to choose between front-wheel drive and the selectable All-Mode 4x4 system. A comprehensive facelift arrived for the 2010 model year, bringing a restyled front fascia with sharper headlights, a new grille and hood, LED tail lamps, refined suspension tuning, improved cabin soundproofing, and an updated instrument cluster. Built predominantly at Nissan's Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom, the J10 achieved massive commercial success across Europe and Russia, while also being marketed in Japan and Australia under the Nissan Dualis nameplate.
