The third-generation Lexus ES 300 (XV20) launched in 1996, featuring a stiffer chassis, refined Optitron gauges, and optional AVS suspension.
The third-generation Lexus ES 300 sedan (chassis code XV20) debuted in September 1996 for the 1997 model year. Featuring sharper exterior lines and a 30 percent increase in torsional rigidity, the new body achieved a drag coefficient of 0.29. Overall length expanded to 190.6 inches over a 105.1-inch wheelbase. Interior upgrades included the signature electroluminescent Optitron instrument panel, automatic climate control, real wood accents, and an available Nakamichi premium audio system featuring speed-sensitive volume control.
Power came from a refined 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 engine producing 200 horsepower, paired exclusively with a four-speed automatic transmission. In 1998, the engine gained Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), raising output to 210 horsepower and improving torque delivery. An available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) offered electronically adjustable shock absorbers. A 1999 mid-cycle facelift added updated front and rear fascia designs, clear headlamp lenses, and standard side-impact airbags.
