Holden Ute II (VU) photos

The second generation of the Holden Ute launched in December 2000 with the VU series, utilizing the wider and more rigid long-wheelbase platform derived from the VT and VX Commodore wagons. A fundamental technical advancement was the adoption of an independent rear suspension (IRS) across the range, transforming the vehicle's road handling, balance, and high-speed stability compared to traditional live-axle commercial pickups. The model evolved through the sharply styled VY series in 2002 to the final VZ facelift introduced in 2004. With the VZ iteration, Holden replaced the aging pushrod Ecotec engine with the modern all-aluminium 3.6-litre Alloytec DOHC V6 featuring variable valve timing, coupled with either an Aisin six-speed manual or a GM five-speed automatic. Performance trims such as the SS and HSV Maloo were powered by GM's legendary Gen III 5.7-litre LS1 V8, which was replaced by the 6.0-litre Gen IV L76 V8 in late VZ models. The vehicle enjoyed immense popularity in Australasia, while left-hand-drive and export variants were sold in South Africa and the Middle East under the Chevrolet Lumina Ute nameplate.
