Holden Ute I (VG) photos

The first generation of the standalone Holden Ute range debuted in August 1990 with the VG series, marking the return of a car-based coupe utility to the brand's primary passenger platform after the discontinuation of the WB series. Built on the long-wheelbase floorpan derived from the VN Commodore station wagon, the VG Ute combined passenger car dynamics and cabin comfort with a spacious and robust rear load bed. Throughout its ten-year production run, the model underwent sequential generational updates mirroring the Commodore passenger car line: VP in 1992, VR in 1993, and VS in 1995. These updates brought major ergonomic enhancements, modernized front-end styling, dual airbags, ABS, and optional independent rear suspension on high-performance trims. Powertrain offerings centered on the 3.8-litre naturally aspirated Buick-derived V6 and later the Ecotec V6, alongside the iconic 5.0-litre Australian Holden V8 pushrod engine. Transmission options included five-speed manual gearboxes (BorgWarner T5 and later Getrag units) and GM four-speed electronic automatic transmissions. While standard working models targeted tradespeople, sport-oriented S and SS variants gained massive cultural appeal among private enthusiasts in Australia and New Zealand.
