The VS series Holden Ute was the final and most technologically advanced iteration built on the second-generation Commodore platform.
Produced from 1995 until late 2000, the VS series Holden Ute was the definitive and longest-running evolution of the platform, staying in production even after the sedan transitioned to the VT generation. It was engineered on the long-wheelbase version of the rear-wheel-drive GM V-body platform, utilizing a two-door utility body with a reinforced integrated load bed and a heavy-duty live rear axle on leaf springs. The headline mechanical upgrade was the introduction of the all-new 3.8-litre Ecotec V6 engine, which delivered greater power, reduced fuel consumption, and smoother operation compared to the older Buick 3800 unit. The traditional 5.0-litre Australian Holden V8 remained available across standard and HSV performance trims. Gearbox choices comprised five-speed manual transmissions (initially Borg-Warner T5, later replaced by a Getrag unit) and the calibrated GM 4L60-E four-speed automatic. Over its extended production run, the VS Ute received both Series II (1996) and Series III (1998) facelifts, introducing revised badging, new interior trims, and enhanced equipment. The model was manufactured in Elizabeth, South Australia, and sold in Australia and New Zealand.
