The third generation of the Holden Ute was unveiled in August 2007 as part of the VE platform family, representing an all-new era underpinned by the bespoke billion-dollar rear-wheel-drive GM Zeta architecture. Unlike previous iterations that traced their roots to Opel chassis designs, the VE was wholly engineered by Holden in Australia, providing exceptional torsional rigidity, optimized weight distribution, and bold athletic styling. The powertrain lineup featured high-tech 3.6-litre SIDI direct-injection Alloytec V6 engines and brawny Gen IV small-block V8s, initially the 6.0-litre L98 and flex-fuel L77, mated to Tremec six-speed manual or GM six-speed automatic transmissions. In May 2013, the extensive VF update introduced sophisticated interior electronics, aluminium suspension and body components, and refined aerodynamics. The peak of the model came with the 2015 VF Series II, which installed the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre LS3 V8 delivering 304 kW into the SS and SS-V variants. The Ute was also exported to regional overseas markets such as South Africa as the Chevrolet Lumina Ute. Production ended permanently on October 20, 2017, when General Motors ceased all automotive manufacturing operations in Australia.
