About the model
The first-generation BMW i3 (I01), launched in 2013, was the brand's first mass-produced fully electric vehicle under the BMW i sub-brand. Built as an urban five-door hatchback with coach doors and no B-pillar, it featured an innovative architecture combining an aluminum Drive chassis with a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic Life passenger cell. Propulsion came from a rear-mounted electric motor with a single-speed transmission, along with an optional gasoline range-extender generator.
Throughout its lifespan, the first generation received regular technical updates, including higher-capacity battery packs, cosmetic tweaks, and refined interior tech. Production of the original I01 hatchback ended in 2022.
The second generation (NA0), introduced in 2026, transformed the nameplate into a sleek compact executive sedan. Built on a dedicated next-generation electric architecture, it incorporates advanced electric drive units, high-density battery technology, and modern digital systems while maintaining a zero-emission focus.

BMW has revealed the upcoming next-generation 3 Series sports sedan, headlined by the new M350 xDrive that replaces the previous M340i.
