2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive Recharges From 8 to 50 Percent in 10 Minutes During First Drive
Just as the controversial E65 BMW 7 Series from 2002 pioneered features that eventually became industry standards despite initial criticism, BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse era aims to transform the automotive landscape. A first drive of the all-electric 2027 BMW iX5 suggests that the midsize luxury SUV segment is on the verge of a major shift.
Built on the same updated CLAR platform as the combustion-powered 2027 X5, the iX5 shares the lineup's retro-futuristic styling, panoramic infotainment display setup, and integrated "Heart of Joy" digital architecture. However, the iX5 60 xDrive—currently the sole available electric variant—replaces the gas drivetrain with BMW’s sixth-generation EV technology. It utilizes an 800-volt electrical architecture and a 144-kWh battery pack powering a primary rear externally excited synchronous motor (325 hp, 369 lb-ft) and a front AC induction motor (245 hp, 225 lb-ft). Together, the dual-motor AWD system produces 570 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque through a single-speed direct-drive transmission, enabling an estimated 0–60 mph sprint in 4.4 seconds.
BMW is targeting an EPA-estimated range of 450 miles. During road testing over 100 miles across varied terrain, the iX5 achieved roughly 2.5 mi/kWh while consuming about 25 percent of its battery, indicating it can easily exceed 400 miles in steady freeway driving. Charging capabilities are equally substantial: the iX5 supports a peak DC fast-charging rate of 460 kW, with BMW claiming a 10 to 80 percent charge in 22 minutes on a 500-kW charger. In a demonstration with partners Ionna and Alpitronic using a modified 500-kW station, the SUV charged from 8 to 50 percent in just 10 minutes, peaking above 470 kW and adding 63.4 kWh (around 225 miles of range). For home use, the vehicle supports AC charging up to 15.4 kW via its NACS port and offers bi-directional functionality, acting as a 20-amp mobile power bank, providing home backup power, or charging another EV, with vehicle-to-grid capability potentially coming to the U.S. after its German rollout.
On the road, the iX5 demonstrates seamless system integration. It can learn driver habits to automatically open the charge flap when backing into a stall, and its hands-free driving system automatically resumes operation after temporary driver steering, braking, or throttle intervention. The adaptive regenerative braking system accurately reads traffic and road conditions, bringing the SUV to a full stop in city traffic or letting it coast on highways. Drivers can also manually select Low, Medium, or High regeneration levels to mimic varying degrees of engine braking, or choose the B mode for full one-pedal driving. Equipped with optional air suspension and four-wheel steering, the estimated 6,200-pound SUV delivers both plush ride comfort over rough pavement and agile handling on winding roads.
Measuring 196.8 inches long, 78.7 inches wide, and 68.6 to 68.9 inches tall on a 119.5-inch wheelbase, the five-passenger 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive is scheduled to go on sale in spring 2027 with a base price of $81,250.
