About this generation

The second-generation BMW 4 Series introduced a polarizing vertical kidney grille design alongside hybrid and all-electric i4 powertrains.

Debuting in 2020, the second-generation BMW 4 Series made a dramatic visual statement with its oversized vertical kidney grilles, drawing inspiration from iconic historical BMW models. The lineup consists of the G22 coupe, the G23 convertible which reverted to a lighter fabric soft-top, and the versatile G26 Gran Coupe five-door liftback. Built on the CLAR platform, this iteration features a significantly rigid body structure, wider rear track, and bespoke suspension settings to maximize cornering precision over the 3 Series sedan.

Technologically advanced, the G22 generation integrates 48-volt mild-hybrid technology across its petrol and diesel engines for improved efficiency and initial throttle response. The Gran Coupe body also underpins the plug-in hybrid 430e as well as the fully electric i4 Gran Coupe, representing BMW’s multi-powertrain strategy. Inside, driver-oriented digital displays and the modern iDrive infotainment system complement an engaging chassis setup, consolidating the model’s position as a cutting-edge luxury sports car.
