Launched in October 1965 alongside the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, the Bentley T1 represented a radical technical departure from previous coachbuilt traditions by introducing an advanced unitary steel-and-aluminium monocoque structure. The chassis featured independent suspension on all four corners integrated with a high-pressure hydropneumatic self-levelling system licensed from Citroen, as well as four-wheel disc brakes with triple-circuit hydraulics. Initially powered by the 6.2-litre V8 engine, it was upgraded in 1970 to the iconic 6.75-litre displacement, linked to GM-sourced three-speed Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmissions. The model lineup included four-door saloons, long-wheelbase variants, and rare coachbuilt two-door fixed-head coupes and drophead coupes crafted by Mulliner Park Ward. The T1 achieved international success as a modern, compact, yet supremely comfortable luxury touring car throughout Europe and North America.
