Bentley S-Series II gallery (1959–1962)
The second generation Bentley S-Series introduced the brand's iconic all-aluminum L-Series V8 powertrain in 1959.
Launched in the autumn of 1959, the Bentley S2 retained the graceful external styling of its predecessor while undergoing a major powertrain revolution. The aging straight-six was replaced by a newly developed 6.2-litre all-aluminium overhead-valve V8 engine from the legendary L-Series family, paired with an updated four-speed automatic transmission. This mechanical overhaul dramatically improved acceleration, torque delivery, and overall refinement. Power steering was made standard equipment, while the cabin received a redesigned dashboard, improved air conditioning, and enhanced push-button electrical controls. In addition to the standard factory four-door steel body, Bentley offered extended wheelbase variants alongside bespoke drophead and fixed-head coachbuilt bodies by Park Ward and H.J. Mulliner, including the celebrated S2 Continental. The S2 was widely praised for its effortless touring capability across key markets in the UK, mainland Europe, and the United States.
