About this generation

The first-generation Audi Q5 (8R) established benchmark standards in the mid-size luxury SUV class upon its 2008 debut.

Debuting in 2008, the first-generation Audi A5-derived Q5 (chassis code 8R) quickly became a global bestseller in the mid-size premium crossover market. Engineering on the MLP platform allowed a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a clean exterior shape capped by a wrap-around aluminum tailgate. Structural rigidity and cabin noise insulation were praised.

Engine options included 2.0 TFSI, 3.2 FSI V6, 3.0 TFSI petrols, and 2.0 TDI / 3.0 TDI V6 diesels. Power reached all four wheels via permanent Torsen-based quattro (40:60 default split) through 7-speed S tronic or 8-speed Tiptronic automatics. In 2011, Audi introduced the Q5 Hybrid quattro, marking Audi's first production hybrid vehicle.
